Now that the high school season has begun for many and right around the corner for others, it is time to remember some key components of high school baseball.
First and foremost, let’s not ignore the obvious! While competition levels vary drastically across the board from state to state and within regions all across the United States. One thing that cannot be ignored is how you fare amongst your peers. There is no substitute for producing at a high and consistent level during your competitive high school season. College coaches have to be more performance-based than projection-based. While they realize that high school stats are not a full-proof method of evaluation because of the varying competitive levels, they do value production and success. The reason being that there is no greater indicator of future success than past success. While that is seemingly simplifying the complexities of recruiting, it is certainly a key component. Professional baseball is somewhat different in their evaluation process. Major League organizations will factor in the projections of a player in a much greater capacity. While they are also considering current performance, a player’s tools and physical projections are huge components of how their evaluation process goes. A professional baseball scout is not only looking for essentially what you can do now, but how your tools project into a useful skillset at the major league level approximately 4-5 years down the line for a high school player and in a shorter window of time for a college player.
Think of your high school season as the conduit of what you do during your summer travel season. We all know that the summer travel season is where most, if not all, of the in-person evaluation and recruiting takes place. Playing in a quality summer travel program is imperative to the recruiting process. There are many reasons for that, as we have outlined in previous blog posts. Your high school season body of work without question will help solidify what that college coach may be seeing during the summer. Without a quality body of work within your high school season, a plethora of questions will unquestionably arise for a college coach that is evaluating you during the summer travel circuit. College coaches also value the team concept of what high school baseball brings to the table. A group of players ultimately trying to win a championship for their school, program, and community. Pretty easy connection to make for all involved.
Lastly, let’s not forget to at least maintain the strength and conditioning that you built up over the offseason. Certainly no easy task with school, practice, games, and life all taking place. Those who embrace the process of being the best version of themselves will definitely find a way to make that happen.
Best of luck to all this spring season. For more informative articles like this, click on our logo up above for the website, or head directly to:
