As the JUCO baseball and softball seasons are now underway, many sophomores are out there competing all the while still searching and hoping for the next four year school opportunity. The JUCO recruiting timeline for the majority of student-athletes happens late and tends to move fast once it begins. There are many players that, coming off a outstanding freshman campaign, garner early fall attention and offers. But for the majority of JUCO players, the waiting game gets deep into the spring and in many cases the summer after the completion of their sophomore seasons.
The later spring/summer sophomore timeline has various factors built into the process. Many times a four year school will get a better feel for what immediate roster help may be needed as they get deeper into their own seasons. After all, a recruited JUCO player, now, more than ever, is expected to provide immediate and impactful contributions at a four year school. With that in mind, the process for many four year schools becomes even more targeted and calculated as their own spring seasons strengths and weaknesses become more apparent.
In addition, the transfer portal weighs clearly and heavily in on this process as well. Four year schools will be determining what may become available ahead of the official transfer portal opening date of June 1 and weighing that against what the potential JUCO options that are out there. This past year we saw a large amount of quality JUCO players still available well into the summer due to some of the above mentioned factors.
So as a JUCO baseball/softball player, how do you get yourself noticed? First and foremost, as mentioned in many previous blog posts, there is no substitute for production. In addition, your academics will also become a separator in level determination. With these two previously mentioned components in mind, now comes the importance of a targeted search and plan. Blanket social media posting alone has been proven to NOT be the answer. A quality evaluation of both your athletic projections and academic status is the first key step in the process. As explained above, time for most is of the essence. The window of active recruitment is far shorter than it was in high school. If you are for example a quality D2 fit and your spinning your wheels reaching out to the wrong level(s), eventually those opportunities will dry up as well. Keep in mind, many D1 four year schools will be evaluating the JUCO crop of players and comparing to what may be available from the four year transfer portal. So the longer a JUCO player waits or is looking in the wrong direction, as the transfer portal opens the task will only become that much more difficult.
Having the necessary tools/resources/professional guidance has become more important than ever. We here at https://fldrs.net/ have former JUCO Head Coaches on staff. In addition we have former four year college coaches and MLB scouts on staff. Our staff has been on all sides of the process. We are big proponents of what JUCO athletics can do for a student-athlete: CREATE OPTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES. The key here is knowing how to go about the process in a timely and efficient manner. Couple that with a solid network and unparalleled credibility, we have been able to successfully find the right fits for all our previous JUCO players.
Best of luck this Spring Season!
