This is Part 2 of a two part series.
So here we are. Spring season is right around the corner, you are a 2027 HS grad or a 2027 JUCO grad. Where does the recruiting process timeline fit for you?
Lets start with the HS 2027 Baseball and Softball player. MANY college programs are just getting ramped up with their 2027 recruiting class. Why is that? In many cases college programs spent a considerable amount of time and resources this past summer on a couple things: 1- managing their own rosters with losses/additions from the Transfer Portal. 2- In Baseball’s case, spending a considerable amount of time at collegiate summer leagues looking for established college players in the Transfer Portal that can fit their own programs needs.
What this meant for the high school player, was a considerable reduction of college coaches attending summer tournaments evaluating the 2027 class of collegiate prospects. This in theory was supposed to be the 2207 class turn to be the focal point of their evaluation time. August 1 of the baseball players junior year and September 1 of the Softball players junior year, is the first time coaches can directly recruit/contact a baseball or softball player. Prior to that, there was no permissible direct contact from coach to player. So the preceding months of evaluations at summer tournaments, in theory, would be essential. There were still coaches in attendance, just a clear reduction in volume. This case holds more true with regard to baseball recruiting than softball, because of the vast amount of collegiate summer baseball leagues where coaches could evaluate Transfer Portal players.
The amount of college baseball coaches in attendance at such tournaments in the fall as the PG Underclass, etc. was considerably higher than seen in the summer from a baseball perspective. With the fall tournament schedule basically shutting down in baseball by mid October, the September and early October events were heavily attended by college coaches. Softball’s recruiting calendar is somewhat different, as tournaments go much deeper into the fall, thus allowing for more evaluation time.
The 2027 baseball and softball high school class should be taking a serious look at upcoming camps of interest, if not already doing so. By that I mean, individual schools “prospect camps.” First and foremost, obviously any school that you have had some direct contact with should be strongly considered as far as attending a camp that they may be hosting. Be realistic when considering attending a camp or two prior to the start of the spring season. Schools that you may have had some contact with should obviously take precedent. It is ok to take a flyer and attend a “dream school” type camp. Just try and back that up with something that may be more realistic division/level wise at this stage. Consider all levels, including D1/D2/D3/NAIA/ and JUCO. Many programs will have prospect camps as late as January 16-19 (Holiday Weekend) and I have even some schools with a camp the following week. If your recruitment is still open, attending 1-2 of these camps prior to the start of the spring 2026 season can prove to be very beneficial as long as there is a plan and the camps are properly targeted.
Lastly, there is NO replacing junior year production at the high school level. That goes without saying. Production in any area in life answers a lot of questions and gives an idea of the bridges to your projections as an athlete. In the case of athletics, production at a lower level (high school) is a prerequisite to play at a higher level (college). There are always outliers as examples that may include extenuating circumstances, such as injury, etc. that prohibited or hindered production. Bottom line, show production so it can aide and assist in your recruiting process.
Turning our attention to the JUCO 2027 class. This means you are entering your first spring as a college softball/baseball player. You have had the fall to hopefully get up to speed both academically and athletically. Your first spring, and the amount of success you hopefully have, will dictate the timeline of your four year school recruiting heading into your sophomore year. Freshman success will lead to earlier fall recruiting for you from the four year schools. If your freshman year had mixed results production wise, then you will more than likely need a solid spring your sophomore year before schools begin seriously considering you for their program. Do not sleep on the academic side as well. Make sure that you are on track to get your A.A. Degree. That will open up some doors schools wise, scholarship wise, and also will allow those credits to transfer over. Falling short of your A.A. Degree will affect all the previously mentioned benefits.
I hope this has provided some general guidelines and ideas, along with providing some timelines for the 2027 High School and JUCO classes.
