Spring Season is right around the corner for both HS and JUCO 2026’s; Two Part Series: 2027 class next

So you are a 2026 and still looking for a home next fall. Hopefully you have had some dialogue with a school or two, but even if you have not to date, there is still hope to find a landing spot. Having a sound plan with proper guidance are key components to achieving your goal. So lets take a look at some scenarios.

By this time, we can safely assume (outliers always exist) that D1 baseball is not a reality. Scenarios have previously taken place where a last minute opportunity opens up. But that groundwork was probably laid a while back and generally would be for pitching. Moving on to the D2 level. More potential opportunities may be here. Realistically, once again, it will probably fall within the pitching parameters. Some D2 programs may still be in the high school position player market. Keep in mind, many D2 programs have Developmental/JV programs that will have plenty of opportunities available at this juncture. A developmental/JV roster spot does not in any way, shape, or form, guarantee a matriculation to the varsity team at any time during your career. D3 schools can be a very attractive opportunity at this stage. Some D3 schools on the higher academic side do have admission application deadlines that are are now approaching, while some utilize the rolling admissions process. D3 baseball has gotten more competitive than ever, so a targeted aggressive approach is imperative. The NAIA level mirrors somewhere in-between the D2 and D3 scenarios. NAIA programs, like many D2 programs, can be transfer (JUCO/4 year) heavy. Many also have developmental programs as well.

That leaves us with the NJCAA (JUCO) levels. JUCO athletics is made up of three different levels. NJCAA D1 can offer up to 25 full scholarships consisting of tuition/book/fees and room and board. NJCAA D2 can offer up to 25 scholarships consisting of tuition/books/fees and an additional $250. Notice that I have used the word CAN for both these levels when discussing how many scholarships they can offer. Many institutions will not have the full allowable amount of scholarships to award. Each school makes their own financial decisions accordingly. This is no different than many/most NCAA D1 (34 Full) and NCAA D2 (9 Full) schools not having the full allowable amount of scholarship money to offer. NJCAA D3 schools are the same as NCAA D3 ( 4 Yr Schools) in that no athletic money can be offered. Academic and Financial Aid monies make up the allowable “packages.”

For the high school senior, a couple points of emphasis need to be made here. Broaden your geographic horizons to open up potential opportunities. Take a hard, educated look, at potential JUCO opportunities. JUCO athletics opens up the door to future opportunities that would not and were not in the picture as a high school athlete. As a former JUCO Head Coach, my opening day speech to the players always started with this… “Nobody grew up wanting to be a (insert school mascot). This is pathway to future opportunities, that through hard work on and off the field, production, and maturity, this program will provide for you.” Now, that being said, JUCO baseball/softball has become as competitive as ever. Supply is greater than ever and outweighs demand. This is simply a trickle down effect. And unlike most people think, it does not start with the roster reductions at the D1 level from 40 to 34. Realistically that 40 man roster anyway was more like 45 or so with redshirts, medical redshirts, etc. This is just a contributor to JUCO and all levels being more competitive roster spot wise. Like anything in life, the trickle down effect starts at the top. And that is with MLB. The reduction of teams/leagues at the minor league level has reduced professional playing opportunities by at least 2,000. So where are these players going and then once getting there staying? College baseball. As stated previously, maybe you have to leave a warm weather state to find a JUCO opportunity in the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, or the Northeast. There are many quality programs all over the country that can provide a quality pathway to future options and opportunities. Obviously, there is no substitute for production. That goes without saying.

What about the current JUCO Sophomore’s that will finish their two year career in 2026. That process in general can and frequently does happen later. With many scholarships being offered/extended in the spring. There are reasons for this. Four year D1/D2 programs may realize that they will be losing players to the transfer portal. A JUCO player can fill an immediate need for the following year. As the season progresses these levels may get a clearer picture of exactly what they need in order to improve for the following year. JUCO players who produce provide more of an immediate plug-n-play option than a high school player. Battle tested at a higher level, physically more mature/older, and used to the longer college season. NAIA programs will also be more in play for those JUCO players as the spring season progresses as well.
